Almost everyone loves candy, no matter how old you are. Trick or Treating is very common throughout many countries and states. And yes, there is a Trick and Treat, but one of the most common treats is CANDY!! Candy has evolved throughout the centuries. Let’s take a look at the evolution process!

Halloween is a holiday loved by children and adults. Everyone gets to dress up, prank, and most importantly, get candy! Halloween traditions as we know them started around the 1930s when kids would get toys, coins, or baked goods. Though in the 1970’s, candy started to become the most popular treat to give, since it was wrapped and factory made.

Halloween without candy corn is like Easter without jelly beans, or milk without cookies.  The person responsible for the candy corn craze was George Renninger of the Wunderle candy company.  Candy corn was created in 1880, and by the 1900’s, it was the job of many to make candy corn. Although not everyone loves candy corn, it is still very popular.

Kit Kat bars are also a very common candy given out on Halloween. Kit Kats were created in England in 1937. They were created by Nestle and soon became a popular Halloween treat. In the USA, Kit Kats are made under Hershey’s license.  No matter what company it’s from, they are amazing!

Another beloved Halloween treat are Snickers. Full size, medium, or small, Snickers have been  popular since the 1930’s. They were only five cents, which was a cost-effective treat even back then! They were given out on Halloween and soon became a big hit.

Candy in the past was awesome, especially how cheap it was, but there are many people who created newer, delicious candies that we munch on now. These creators have made a lifetime of success for themselves, which is clear by the 600 million pounds of candy sold during Halloween week!

Although so much candy is sold during Halloween week, in general, candy sales have decreased since 2014. This is due to an increasing focus on health and wellness. Instead of candy, many houses in the future will be giving out fun, healthy snacks. Even candy companies are following suit. Ferro, the company that will soon own the United States division of Nestle, is already tweaking its packages and recipes to reflect this value. However, candy is an indulgence children and even adults love, so it is likely that the tradition of Halloween and trick-or-treating for candy will be here to stay!

Candy is one of the main halloween treats for kids, young adults, and even grown-ups. Candy has evolved throughout the years, and has obviously gotten better! Candy is Halloween’s staple. The ying to Halloween’s yang. The hip to its hop. From SweetTarts to Twizzlers, candy is one of the most enjoyed treats for the month of October. Candy is eaten worldwide now, and we are sure you (like many other people) want to know what candy FMS students think is best, so check out our poll here.

Candy is (and always will be),a yummy snack no matter if it’s past, present, or future. While there are many ways to make candy, there are also many opinions on which is best. Hope you get through November 1st without a stomach ache! Happy Halloween!
