Should Music Be Allowed in Classes?

Leila Chatterjee and Ellie Skripak

Have you ever listened to music while in class, either with your teacher playing the music or using your computer? Music is fantastic to listen to but is it amazing in classes? Music being allowed in classes has pros and cons. Some of these pros outweigh the cons, but some cons outweigh the pros. Music is a great aspect that our community has made. The ideas and real experiences music provides are truly amazing. This article will give you both sides of the argument and so you can decide what side you like and form your own opinion.

The Pros of Music in Classrooms

Music has many benefits. Many of these benefits have an effect in classrooms. Some benefits of music in the classrooms are the development of reasoning and language, improved coordination, emotional development, enhanced auditory skills, improved creative thinking, opportunities to learn teamwork, and increased engagement in school. All of these benefits happen in the classroom. These excellent benefits of music should be realized and noticed. Music also helps some people focus on their work.

The Cons of Music in Classrooms

Music has pros but everything has at least one con. Music being allowed in classrooms has more than one con. Being a “DJ” on your computer or device can be distracting and can get you off task. Also, students who listen to music with lyrics while completing reading or writing tasks tend to be less efficient. Loud or agitated music can adversely affect reading comprehension and mood, making focus more difficult. It also can distract others. Students who use music to help them memorize sometimes need to listen to that music while taking the test in order to reap the benefits of this study method.

To conclude, listening to music in class can be good for students but also bad. The pros and cons clearly show this. So form your own opinion. But before you go listen to music, ask your teacher! Talk with your teacher, if music helps you try to make a compromise. Have fun and listen to music. Does music help you?
