Since its debut in 2015, Hamilton has been one of the most influential, talked-about musicals of the 21st century. Composed by legendary songwriter and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton has been a sensation ever since it hit theaters. It is still loved and admired to this day, showcasing Lin’s incredible talent with words. The show has turned a short, hour-long Social Studies lesson on American history into a viral R&B musical hit that constantly plays on a loop in people’s heads.
Plot
At its core, Hamilton follows the life of Alexander Hamilton from his teenage years in the Caribbean to his rise to power in America, exploring his key role in shaping the American financial system, which we use to this day. To study the founding fathers of our nation and their known associates is to face a ceaseless parade of white men. Hamilton changes that narrative. The show highlights voices often left out of history, with many Black, Latino, and Asian people playing main roles, symbolically representing who really gets to tell their story and how people perceive it. The music, all written and composed by Miranda, the legend himself, has been described as mesmerizing, invigorating, intricate, and revolutionary by people across the globe. Its fast-paced, yet meticulously thought-out verses have people hypnotized, enthralled in the musical that is Hamilton.

While Hamilton has a beautiful, soulful soundtrack, the play itself is not for everyone. I should know, just ask my sister! Since Hamilton is based on, well, history, it probably wouldn’t be a huge hit with people who aren’t big fans of history/historical fiction. Lin’s masterpiece most likely wouldn’t fly with anyone who prefers speech over song, since Hamilton is a sung-through musical, which means there are little to no words spoken rather than sung in the entirety of the show. Of course, younger children will more likely than not get bored halfway through due to the length of the musical (about 3 hours), or anyone who can’t stay still for a while.
On the other hand, Hamilton is an amazing choice for tweens/teens, especially those who are fans of history, or who are generally finding learning about history in school a bit boring. Hamilton’s musicality and exciting, fun feel make American history much more interesting,
in my opinion. Listening to or watching a scene from Hamilton can make it much more realistic, as if you’re truly there watching Jefferson and Hamilton debate over the France/England war, or another scene from history. Hamilton is always, of course, a big hit with anyone who is a fan of musicals, because of its amazing lyrics and fast-moving characters. While Hamilton isn’t for everyone, I personally think everyone should see it at least once in a lifetime.
To conclude, Hamilton isn’t just a musical; it’s a creative revolution. With innovative music, diverse casting, and emotionally rich storytelling, it transforms a historical biography into a powerful cultural moment. Whether you’re interested in theatre, history, or just good music, Hamilton continues to stand as a reminder that stories from the past can still challenge, inspire, and resonate today.
