These books will be sure to give you this perfect day, so be sure to pack them in your beach bag for the summer.
Realistic Fiction
Restart by Korman Gordon is about Chase Ambrose, a middle school football star who develops amnesia after falling off a roof, forcing him to rediscover his identity and confront his past as a bully. Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus is a middle-grade realistic fiction novel about Aven Green, a 13-year-old girl born without arms who moves to Arizona when her parents take a job running a rundown Western theme park.
Horror
A good horror book is Small Spaces. The book is a middle-grade horror series by Katherine Arden, following three friends—Ollie, Coco, and Brian—as they confront an ancient evil known as the Smiling Man through a series of seasonal, supernatural challenges. Another good horror book would be The Girl in the Lake by India Hill Brown. It’s another middle-grade horror novel about a girl named Celeste who is terrified of the water and must confront her fears at her grandparents’ lake house, where she encounters spooky occurrences and a ghostly presence connected to the lake’s history.
Fantasy
The Thief Is Always a great read. It is about a bored boy named Harvey Swick who is lured to the magical Holiday House, a place of endless treats and seasons, only to discover its sinister purpose: its master, Mr. Hood steals children’s youth and time, and Harvey must escape and confront him. This is a great fantasy novel. Another option is The Wild Robot. It is about Roz, a robot who wakes up stranded on a remote wild island. To survive, she adapts to her environment, learns to communicate with the island’s animals, and adopts an orphaned gosling, ultimately finding a new purpose through love and community.
Romance
A great choice for a summer read is The Summer I Turned Pretty. This novel follows 16-year-old Isabel “Belly” Conklin during a transformative summer at Cousins Beach. Another good book series is To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The book follows Lara Jean Covey, a high schooler whose secret love letters to five past crushes are accidentally mailed. To avoid awkwardness with her sister’s ex-boyfriend, she enters a fake relationship with popular student Peter Kavinsky, eventually falling for him.
In conclusion, we hope we have convinced you to find a good book for the summer. Pack a few of these, let your mind wander, and make this season unforgettable. Happy summer reading!
