As we all know, FMS has an extraordinary 6th-grade band, and we all love listening to them. But then again, they only came together in September. So, how do the musicians in the band feel about their musicality?
While their initial experiences varied, 6th-grade musicians agree that band had significantly improved their skills, as well as their teamwork since the beginning of the year. “I think after we started playing our first song, we took a long time to figure out the notes and the timing, but eventually we were able to play the song with no flaws–almost no flaws,” said Addison Fenner, 6th-grade trumpet and flute player in response to the question, “How do you think the band adjusted to playing with each other?” Multiple others were also asked this question, and answers varied. Evangeline Meyer, a 6th-grade saxophonist, said, “Everybody made new friends, and they learned new music with new people, which helped them bond. I thought that we played alright; it wasn’t the greatest. We could’ve played better in the beginning. Obviously, we played much better in concert than in the beginning of the year.” In contrast, Ava Weryk, 6th-grade flutist, said, “I think that we connected by listening to each other and to help each other’s playing. In the beginning, not going to lie, most of the instruments weren’t great, but I feel they’ve improved.” Even if the musicians are feeling off, we definitely can’t hear it reflected in their amazing music!
The same 6th-grade band members shared their mixed perspectives on how ready they feel for their upcoming concert season. They were asked the question, “How are you feeling about the upcoming concerts?” In response, Evangeline Meyer said, “The music is good, and so far we sound good, so we should be alright for it. I’m going to hope that we play well because if we don’t, we won’t please Mr. Ocasio.” There were some varied responses to this question, however, with Ava Weryk saying, “I think that we are ready with some songs, but we could use some help with others. I hear some parts more than others, so maybe we could work on that.” In contradiction to both Evangeline and Ava, Addison Fenner said, “I’m feeling confident in the songs we have practiced most of the time, but there is one song we are still figuring out. I think we’re getting the hang of it.” We can all definitely look forward to the district and spring concerts from FMS’s 6th-grade band!
Even though the 6th-grade band just came together this September, the band has obviously meshed well together. While they might have some difficulties playing together, the musicians have bonded outside of music as well, forming friendships and establishing relationships. The band clearly plays well together, and we can all definitely look forward to hearing them play again in the spring and years to come!
