When it comes to personal preferences, people can be fiercely loyal to their choices. Some love the thrill of spicy food, while others can’t stand the heat. Sports fans are another prime example; some will proudly wear the blue of the Chicago Cubs, while others are die-hard supporters of the Chicago White Sox, bleeding their team colors through and through. But perhaps one of the most enduring and passionate divides we’ve encountered is the battle between chocolate and vanilla. It’s a rivalry as old as time, with each side having its staunch defenders who wouldn’t dream of crossing over to the other. So why does each side actually prefer their flavor, and, the universal question, which one is actually better?
Chocolate All the Way!
Diving into the chocolate side first, studies have shown that while doctors aren’t going to be prescribing you chocolate anytime soon, chocolate is shown to have positive effects on the heart. A nine-year study done by a group of Swedish scientists had shown that the sweet treat can actually have some pretty effective results on the overall cardiovascular health of the body. The patients in the study who were prescribed to eat a square of dark chocolate every morning were found to have a one-third less chance of suffering a stroke. This is because chocolate contains a specific component: flavonoids. They are powerful antioxidants that keep veins and arteries functioning smoothly. While these health benefits are important, most chocolate lovers will argue that the flavor is infinitely better, with its richer, heartier taste. Chocolate has a more complex flavor profile than vanilla, which has a more subtle, sometimes bland taste. All of these reasons, according to chocolate lovers, are why chocolate is superior to any other.
Vanilla Beats Chocolate Every Time!
While all of the previously mentioned reasons are worthwhile, vanilla lovers scoff in their faces. One of vanilla’s largest arguments is its versatility. Vanilla can be paired with almost anything, and it’ll usually taste good. It is often the foundation of everything from pastry sweets to ice cream itself. Vanilla’s adaptability plays a big part in fan favoritism. Its versatility and ability to be paired with nearly anything you can imagine make it a dreamy, timeless flavor. Another argument often made against chocolate fanatics is that vanilla is a classic. Vanilla is the original ice cream flavor, which adds to its overall appeal. It is also full of antioxidants, making it better for its consumers. It doesn’t have as many health benefits as chocolate, but it does offer some benefits nonetheless. Vanilla is also said to be better as a complement to other flavors, such as milkshakes, without being overly stimulating in flavor. All of these reasons, vanilla lovers say, are completely valid reasons for vanilla being better than chocolate in every way.
Now, for what flavor do most people actually prefer? When asked to choose between chocolate and vanilla, preference for vanilla held strong. By a margin of 49% to 43%, Americans prefer vanilla. Vanilla wins by a lot in the Midwest (56% to 39%) and in the West (53% to 35%). Down in the South, they’re more split on the question, while in the Northeast, chocolate holds their interest (50% to 43%). If the debate is examined statistically, vanilla is the preferred choice, while chocolate shows a much better benefit on the overall experience of life, health-wise. However, neither chocolate nor vanilla is objectively better, as preference is subjective and depends on individual taste and context. Each flavor has its own strengths and weaknesses, and when it’s all boiled down, it comes to one conclusion: the best flavor depends on who you’re talking to and their personal preference. With that being said, everyone go eat some ice cream before it’s too cold outside!
