The Pros and Cons of Homework

Homework. This has become a part of our daily lives, something we must accomplish before the day is over. Some despise it, some rejoice when they hear the word. But what is so good about homework? What are some of the downsides to it? Here are some of the pros and cons to homework.

There are many pros to homework. One good thing about it is that it encourages practice. While doing the same kind of problem over and over again may seem boring, the repetition helps kids grasp the concepts and get better at that subject, whether that is science or reading or math (Vittana). Next, it reduces screen time. By having homework to do after school, it replaces the amount of time children have after school to be watching a screen (ConnectUs Fund). Finally, it gives kids a chance to work at their own pace. Some kids need more time to solve problems, so by having homework, it gives those students an opportunity to work at their own speed (Netivist). Clearly, there are many benefits of homework.

Now for the cons. First of all, it can become a burden for some children, especially the younger ones. After dealing with a long, tiring day at school, kids are required to solve difficult math problems or write long paragraphs (ConnectUs Fund). At that point, kids are too worn out from school to try to complete work independently.  Next, children benefit from playing. With too much homework, they can’t spend that time having fun (Vittana). Finally, homework gets in the way of spending time with family. If a student can’t go to a family event or spend time with family members because they have homework, he or she is being prevented being with family and interacting with other people (Kids World). These are only a few of the cons of homework.

As you can see, there are many benefits and downsides to homework. These are only a few of the many pros and cons of homework. If you love homework, there are definitely downsides. If you hate homework, there are definitely advantages. Maybe this article has changed your view about homework.
