Ever wonder what music is playing in those AirPods everyone at FMS is wearing? If you’re curious about what your fellow classmates’ taste in music is, this article is for you. There is a variety of music styles students enjoy, and then teachers and students’ favorite musical genres will be compared. To obtain this information, I interviewed teachers and students at FMS about what music they are currently listening to and why.
Students’ Musical Preferences
All the students at FMS were born in the 2010’s. Some popular music genres during the 2010’s to 2020’s are pop, hip hop, and rap. These music genres somewhat align with the musical preferences of students at FMS. Pop music was incredibly popular with seven people preferring pop or some combination of pop and rock. Although many people enjoyed pop music and hip hop, rap had some disappointing numbers. Only two students liked rap and no students mentioned hip hop in their interviews. Even though rock music was more popular in the 1980s and 1990s, rock music was tied with pop music for students’ preferences. Many students also enjoyed combinations of rock like pop/rock and country/rock. In addition to those genres, two people enjoyed classical music. Overall, pop and rock music dominated every other genre.
Teachers’ Musical preferences
Throughout the 1980s to 2000s is when most teachers at FMS were children. Many popular styles of music during those times were rock, pop, hip hop, and rap. According to my interviews, many teachers can relate to listening to these catchy rhythms. Pop was the most-liked music out of all the tunes. Rock was also a fan favorite with two of the eight teachers preferring to listen to this on their radioes. Some teachers thought rock and roll had a cool vibe when listening to it. One teacher liked a combination of rock and funk. Hip hop and rap were also pretty popular with teachers. One teacher liked hip hop and another teacher liked a combination of rap and hip hop. Surprisingly, a couple of teachers really enjoy country music. Overall, many teachers at our school enjoy a variety of music styles, with pop being the favorite.
Comparison
The students’ favorite genres of music were rock and pop by a wide margin. The teachers’ favorite genres of music were pop and combinations of rock, country, and hip hop. A similarity between teachers’ and students’ musical preferences was that pop music was the fan favorite for both students and teachers. Also, both teachers and students generally liked the same genres of music. The difference between teachers’ and students’ preference of music styles is that many teachers liked music from their generation, while many students disliked music from their own generation. When interviewing students, they preferred rock and pop music popular with previous generations. In contrast, teachers liked music from their generation very much. Conclusively the most popular type of music is pop with many people enjoying music from the teachers generation.
In conclusion, many different styles of music are being listened to under those headphones. The fan favorite for students is pop music. The students of FMS also enjoyed combinations of rock music and other genres. The teachers at FMS had a dominating number enjoying pop music and popular tunes were hip hop and rock.
