Have you read The Hunger Games or seen the movie? Well if you’ve experienced both, you already know that there are many similarities and differences. We will go over both the movie and the book and talk about them here. There are four books and five movies, and soon, a sixth movie will be released.
Hunger Games: The Book
Hunger Games is written by Suzanne Collins. The plot follows Katniss Everdeen, the female protagonist, who is 16 years old. Katniss has a sister named Primrose and a mom named Carine. Katniss’s dad passed away when Katniss was a little girl. In Panem where they live, there are 12 districts. The city of Panem, the capitol to the districts, hosts an annual event: the Hunger Games, which is when 24 tributes (12 boys and 12 girls) fight to the death in a giant arena. The main character, Katniss Evergreen, is a tribute from District 12 who is almost guaranteed to lose, since she comes from the poorest and weakest District. Katniss is followed by Peeta Mellark, her love interest and companion in the games. The duo survives on wits, skills, and sheer determination against the best of the best. This story is a masterpiece with fans wanting more. The series has a total of four books: Catching Fire, Mockingjay, and Songbirds and Snakes.
Hunger Games: The Movie
The movie was a great version of the original story. Despite how good the movie was, it seems that the book was better than the movie in a few ways. First, it was more popular. The first Hunger Games movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Evergreen, was filmed in 2012. The first book was statistically more popular than the first movie and the same with all the other books and movies in the series. For instance, the first movie made much less at $694,394,724, compared to the book, which made $3.3 billion worldwide.
Also, some say the movie effects were too cheesy, especially during some fighting scenes. One of the most disappointing parts, though, was when the gong rang to start the Hunger Games, everyone went their separate ways and that scene ended pretty quickly, which was disappointing because that scene was described with more detail and was very engaging in the book.
Some positive aspects of the movie are that some scenes were viewed from the head game makers’ stands, which gives a way better perspective of this world that is so different from real life. To add to that, the directors gave the movie tons of suspense and drama, like when the contestants first walked into the arena, or when Prim was picked in the reaping. The directors also did a great job with the reaping scene, when all the tributes are chosen, showing how poor and ragged the citizens of District 12 were. The detail provided was very interesting to see!
To conclude, the Hunger Games book is more loved and popular than the movie. Now you know second hand (or firsthand, if you watched the movie and read the book), the good and the bad, and our thoughts. Which one do you like more?
