Is social media a big part of your life? People in our school use it every day. From Youtube to Tik Tok and Snapchat, there are so many social media platforms. There are many pros and cons of using social media.
Pros: Communicating With Friends and Family
A big reason social media is a part of our lives is to communicate with family and friends when they aren’t with them. Some platforms that people use to communicate are Snapchat, iMessage, Messenger, and Whatsapp. People share photos, videos and text messages to people who are very far away. Kids also use these platforms for school to communicate with their friends and classmates.
Cons: Anxiety and Depression
A big con of social media is anxiety and depression. A big part of depression on social media is comparing yourself to others on social media because their life seems so fantastic. However, in reality that’s not true. Everyone struggles sometimes! Another scenario is when friends hang out and then you’re not invited. When you see that they post about events on social media, it can feel isolating because you missed out on a fun event.
Cyberbullying is when people bully others on social media. A lot of kids are very emotional with this, as it can be experienced often, even everyday. One of the common reasons for cyberbullying is based on a person’s looks and lifestyle. Bullies like to pick on others because maybe they do not have the latest or most expensive and popular brands of clothing and products.
Sometimes, cyberbullying can get very dangerous and lead to personal information, such as address and phone numbers, being shared with the wrong person. Someone can break into your account and steal your money, identity, and other personal information. If you get cyberbullied, talk to an adult so they can help you and stop the bullying.
In conclusion, social media has its pros and cons. Cyberbullying, anxiety, and depression are not good, but communicating with family and friends is a positive aspect. What do you think? Is social media more positive or negative?
