There are many award shows throughout the year and it is easy to get them all mixed up. This guide will look at the four main award shows, what they celebrate, and how they came to be.

 

The Grammys

The Grammy Awards is a show that celebrates achievement in music. They have been presented by the Recording Academy since 1958. Winners receive a gramophone-shaped trophy. Some of the biggest categories are Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year. This year the Grammy Awards ceremony were on February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. They were broadcasted on CBS.

 

The Oscars

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscar awards, are for achievements in film. The are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first Oscars were in 1929. Winners receive a human shaped trophy called the Academy Award of Merit. The most well-known categories are Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. This year the Academy Awards were held on February 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. They were broadcasted on ABC.

 

The Tonys

The Tony Awards, short for the Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, are for achievement on Broadway. They are presented by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League, and were first held in 1947. Winners receive the Tony medallion, which is a giant coin with the comedy and tragedy masks on it. Some big categories are Best Musical, Best Play, Best Revival of a Musical, and Best Revival of a Play. This year, the Tony awards will be held at The Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 9th. The show will be broadcast on CBS.

 

The Emmys

The Primetime Emmy Awards are for showing excellence in television. The are presented by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and were first awarded in 1949. Winners receive a trophy of winged woman holding up an atom. A few major categories are Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Comedy Series, and Outstanding Limited Series. This years the Emmys will be at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 22. They will be broadcast on Fox.

These are only the four biggest awards. There are also many other smaller awards like the Golden Globes (TV and Film), SAG awards (Acting), Obie awards (Off Broadway plays and Musicals), Daytime Emmys, (Daytime TV) and Gramophone Awards (Classical Music). Which shows will you watch this year?
